CEAC at Tech Trek

The Climate Education and Action Committee was excited to be included in this year’s Tech Trek program at Camp Carson. Bringing climate education to the community is the major purpose of CEAC. The enthusiasm of the 73 Tech Trek girls was evidence that the workshop was a resounding success.

Our focus was on single use plastic bags and the damage they do to the environment. Following a few questions about their knowledge of climate issues, we introduced the topic with a short video on ocean plastic pollution. Before watching it, students appeared a little indifferent; afterward most seemed seriously engaged. They showed lots of enthusiasm as they participated in hands-on activities and interactive discussions about how to get involved. Making a positive impact on the environment came up again and again. Ideas such as joining or starting climate groups at their schools, getting involved in community advocacy, and looking at careers in the environmental field were suggested. It was exciting just listening and watching them. Afterwards, a few thanked us for coming and asked for more ways to get involved, so we knew the program was a success.
