About street corner protests

In response to queries from branch members about whether it’s appropriate to be out on the street corner with signs protesting what’s happening in Washington, D.C., AAUW California says in no uncertain terms, yes, it is!

According to Missy Maceybo from AAUW California, our national organization has left it up to states to decide whether protests are partisan and therefore against AAUW’s official nonpartisan status:

“The AAUW California board voted on this issue in June. We agreed that many of the ongoing protests are not partisan – they are created to defend things we care about, such as democracy, educational access, and social justice. As such, you can (and should) promote and participate in protest activity that aligns with our public policy priorities – If representing AAUW California, you should just make sure you create protest signs and slogans that are not partisan, but that reflect this policy-priority focus.”

In Morgan Hill, weekly street-corner protests have been moved to 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturdays at the corner of Monterey and Dunne.
